The News

Restaurateurs
routinely add new
items on the menu,
but few add
restaurants as
frequently as
Lessing’s Inc.
Owned by the Lessing
family and led by
CEO Jack Lessing,
Lessings has built a
Long Island empire,
operating 22
restaurants,
catering halls and
country club dining
facilities. Founded
in 1890 by Maxwell
Lessing, the company
in the early 1980’s
moved its
headquarters to Long
Island after opening
its first Island
eatery, The Post
Office Café, in
Babylon in 1978.
Lessing’s has been
busy gobbling up and
opening eateries,
acquiring Hutley’s
in Islip in 2005
after taking over
dining at the Tall
Grass Country Club
in Shoreham. It
places to add
another restaurant
each year.
“We’re looking to
grow a minimum of 20
percent a year in
revenues, “said
Michael Lessing,
executive vice
president.
The firm, which
employed about 350
in 2002, has grown
to 700 employees,
with an expansion
that included
converting libraries
and post offices
into restaurants.
Lessing’s in March
acquired the Three
Village Inn in Stony
Brook, merging two
of Long Island’s
first families of
food.
